I won't start out by saying "this area was discovered in". I'm always puzzled when I read an article that starts that way and a European is named. In this area, various tribes of native americans now known collectively as Ohlones were already here. Here's a great article on their history.

This area was selected as a site for a mission and it was founded in 1791. Construction on the mission was started in 1792. It has since survived pillaging, tidal waves, earthquakes and pilfering of material.

Today, Santa Cruz is certainly a fun place to explore. With it's boardwalk, eclectic mixture of residents, university and easy access to the beach, trails and parks it's a great community.

Don't forget to visit Lighthouse Field on the north side of town for a full view of the city.
