A few miles off of Hwy 101 just north of Santa Barbara, Solvang seems like a different country.
Diverse shopping experiences, fascinating cultural events and local historical sites including a Spanish Mission combine to make a wonderful day or weekend trip.

All the history references say pretty much the same thing. "In 1910 a group of Danish educators from the Midwest met to establish a colony on the West Coast." 1910 wasn't a bad time to be heading west. R.T. Buell had established a real community in Buellton. California had been a possession of the US a long time. The film industry was starting up in Santa Barbara.

Still, they were excited enough to name the town Solvang, or Sunny Valley. The Danish soon had a reputation for being hard workers and were soon transforming this area.

Despite the tourist aspects and modifications that go along with that the Danish culture has remained strong and you can still attend a church service given in Danish.

The culture and ideology remain rich. There are many events hosted by the town and the PCPA theater group has a reputation reaching most of the southern half of the Central Coast.
