Lompoc

Lompoc is a Chumash word which means little lake or lagoon
It's the original location of the Mission La Concepcion Purisima De Maria Santisima which brought in the first Europeans.
In August of 1874 land was purchased here for the establishment of a temperance colony. Hoping to get away from the influences of alchohol, I wonder what they would have thought of all the wineries in the area.
This area saw another small population influx for a short time during the Gold Rush when gold was found on the local beaches.
By 1901 a railroad line had been laid into town and opened the area commercially. This area is well known for the flowers raised as seed stock. A great photo of an American Flag made from flowers is floating around the Internet somewhere.
Artesia School
Founded in 1876 and was used through 1961

This town is now centered on the Air Force and local agriculture. Surprisingly large for an out-of-the-way town like this, you can see the imprint Vandenberg AFB has had. Places like the Missile trailer court. The McDonalds has a large mural of an astronaut.

But head out Central and you're soon surrounded by fields, still green with producelate in the year.
