Hystrix Cristata
The crested porcupines of Africa can reach body weights of 45 lbs. Their upper bodies are covered with sharp quills up to a foot in length. When alarmed or annoyed porcupines will raise their quills, giving the animal a crested appearance. They do not shoot their quills, but may back up suddenly, imbedding their quills in whatever they may encounter.

They live in pairs or small groups. Active at night, African porcupines shelter in burrows of caves during the day.

Asiatic Black Bear (Selenarctos thibetanus)
Little is know of this bear's behavior in the wild. They are mainly nocturnal and sleep in caves or trees during the day. It generally avoids man, but may raid agricultural areas for corn and fruits.

Winters are spent in dens where the bear may sleep for much of the time. This in not true hibernation and the bear may leave the den if disturbed or occasionally to feed.

Major threats to all Asian bear populations include habitat destruction and poaching for folk medicine.

Diet: Primarily plant material, acorns and nuts, insects.

Distribution: Forests and mountains of southern and southeastern Asia.

Capybara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris)

The Capybara, the largest rodent species, may weigh up to 100 lbs. Capybaras have rough skin and a thinly haired coat ranging from brown to red.

They live in dense vegetation near lakes, rivers and swamps. Their partially webbed toes make them good swimmers. When alarmed, they flee to water for safety and can stay submerged for a long time with only the top of their head above water.

They live in groups of 10 to 40. During the dry season, more than 100 may congregate around the remaining pools and lakes.
