The inn may not have been a place you wanted to take
the family. It had a reputation for a seedy clientele,
including the Dalton Brothers and Frank & Jesse
James.
In 1886 the Southern Pacific
Railroad arrived in San Miguel, bringing a touch of civilization.
Despite once having an infamous reputation, the adobe
went on to become a tailor shop, an upholstery shop, post
office and even a school.
While the idea of opening it to
the public originated as far back as 1923 when Charles
Dorries purchased it along with some local property, it
wasn't until 1964 that it was purchased by the county
and plans were made to convert it into a museum.
