Built in 1835 as a house for the civilian administrator
of the San Miguel Mission, the adobe is a collection
of artifacts from the history of this area.
In the photo below, you see that many of these items
are actually for sale.
The history of the adobe is
interesting and diversified. In 1846 the adobe was sold
by Governor Pio Pico. After becoming a posession of the
United States, he high-tailed it out of the area knowing
it was an illegal sale. Probably up north to sell a bridge
In 1868 George Butchart opened
the adobe as an inn, hotel, stagecoach stop and local
bar. This is where the name Caledonia came from, the Gaelic
word for Scotland.
