Named by Spanish explorer Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1512, the
shape of the rock reminded him of the hats worn by Moores.
In recent times an artificial land bridge has been created
out to the rock, forming an enclosed bay and protected area
popular with otters.
The ocean side is a popular destination for swimmers and
surfers. You can see otters floating on the bay side, eating
and enjoying the protection it affords.
It's also a popular spot for viewing the large waves that
can hit the area after a storm.
