With over 8,000 acres of incredible wilderness nestled at the end of a peninsula, the sites to be discovered at Montana de Oro are incredible.

Montana de Oro is one of my favorite trail areas. It has several year round streams that flow to the ocean, attracting a wide variety of animals and birds.

It's not unusual to see coyotes walking around at sunset looking for small game, as hikers enjoy the last few minutes of golden light over the ocean.

The tide pools are incredibly beautiful. Dark blue water is surrounded by striated rock. In the pools you'll find a variety of crabs, anemones, and other small critters.

The road starts high and the views of Morro Bay are breathtaking.

At any given time you'll find hikers, students, surfers, kayakers, horse back riders, mountain bikes, road bicycles and campers. There's a visitors station in the old Spooner's Ranch house peopled with docents ready to answer any question. It's open Fri - Sun and closes at 3:00 on Sunday.

Every Spring I take my camera and hit the trails as soon as they start drying out. You'll find a long season of wildflowers blossiming along the trail. There almost seems to be an endless variety of colors in Montana de Oro.

Use Los Osos Valley Rd.west off US 101, 3 miles south of San Luis Obispo. Travel 12 miles west on Los Osos Valley Rd. Los Osos Valley Rd. turns south and becomes Pecho Valley Rd. Look for signs.
