Ever wonder what's behind the gate on Highway 1 just north
of the Elephant Seal Rookery?
This is the home of the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse.
Now owned by the Bureau of Land Management,
volunteer crews are hard at work getting the property ready
for curious tourists. The structures are being repaired, invading
plants are being restored, and native plants are encouraged
to grow.
It's a government project, and as
such is moving speedily ahead at a snail's pace. But in the
mean time, you can see the
lens from the lighthouse in Cambria on your way through.
Tours are now being at the Piedras Blancas lighthouse just north of Cambria in San Luis Obispo County. There are two tours one day a month. You can see the tour dates on the BLM website at www.piedrasblancas.gov.
The surrounding area is a real treasure chest of wildlife. An extension of the elephant seal rookery just around the corner, seals, otters, peregrine falcons and eagles can also be seen.
If you go during whale season you might see a mother and calf rounding the horn. Whales are known to go between the shore and an outer rock on their return trip north.
