The Monterey peninsula was
discovered by Spaniard Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542.
The area was left relatively alone by Europeans until
they again returned to establish the mission and presidio
in 1770.

The mission was later moved
to Carmel, but the Presidio continued to be an important
outpost in the area. This city has changed hands from
Spanish rule to Mexican government to becoming a territory
of the United States and now boasts a population of 32,000.
Today, Monterey is home to
the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio, the famous
Cannery row, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. With Carmel
just down Hwy. 1, the 17 Mile Drive, and the world famous
Pebble Beach Golf Resort next door in Pacific Grove, this
is a very popular tourist destination.
