San Miguel Mission

The Official Site:
Mission San Miguel Archangel

This mission was founded in 1797 by Presidente Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. It's a fascinating look into the European past of California.

Just off Hwy 101 north of Paso Robles, it's well worth your time to stop by and see this landmark. While you're here, stop and see the Rios-Caledonia Adobe also.

I'm not sure the Spanish Padres that came here were ready for the weather. Incredibly hot in the summer, freezing temperatures in the winter, this and the Mission at Soledad must have been the most challenging. But the Salinas River was here, and with the creation of an extensive irrigation system made this area very productive.

Today it is a parish church, novitiate, and retreat house. The modern tennis court in the middle of the Mission is a symbol of the current concerns of the Mission while steeped in history and tradition.
