Much of this narrative is provided in the Mission brochure.
This mission was founded by Fray Junipero
Serra. This was the ninth and last mission founded by
Father Serra.
Like the Santa Barbara Mission, the
mission had an aqueduct which brought fresh water right
to their doorstep.

This mission is in the middle of downtown
Ventura and still very active. A school is just back
of the mission and the front is a busy sidewalk with
many small businesses in the area. With it's whitewashed
walls and business location, I was expecting a very
commercialized tour. But from the moment I walked in
the gift shop I was charmed and taken by the energy
of a very active parish.
On March 31,
Fray Serra assisted by Padre Pedro Benito Cambon celebrated
Mass, gave a sermon and dedicated the new Mission. Padre
Cambon was left in charge, and the new Mission quickly
grew under his direction. One of his physical achievements
was the construction of a 7 mile long aqueduct.
