The Culver Hotel is a Landmark historic, boutique hotel in the center of the wonderfully congenial village atmosphere of downtown Culver City. Culver City, known as the Heart of Screenland is home to Columbia Pictures and the Sony Entertainment Company and Studios. Bordering three main freeways, the Culver Hotel is 5-8 miles from most important LA destinations including: LAX, downtown, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach and even the San Fernando Valley. In 1924 Klieg lights called attention to one of Culver Citys greatest premieres, the grand opening of a six-story skyscraper hotel and office complex in the center of town. The Culver Hotel is a wedge shaped Renaissance Revival-style beauty, fashioned with sculpted concrete, brick, ornate overhanging eaves and 200 magnificent windows. The interior elegance is portrayed in mahogany, walnut and marble detailing with a grand lobby and dramatic winding staircase.The Culver Hotel was the home to the Stars of what were then MGM studios. Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and other cast stayed while filming Gone with the Wind. Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Buster Keaton, Ronald Regan and Red Skelton were all long-term guests of the hotel. The Wizard of Oz cast including, the Munchkins called it home. Laurel and Hardy lived in, and used the hotel as their set making Putting Pants on Phillip. The buildings outstanding presence has been used for numerous other feature and television locations. The hotel was once owned by John Wayne, who might have felt the hotel was so much like home, he may as well own it.Retaining its 20s charm, the Hotel is recognized as a Landmark locally, and is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
